The city is situated 130 km from the capital and can easily be reached by taking the highway (over land is the only way to get to Matagalpa). Because the city is build on hills the streets make you continuously ascent and descent. MatagalpaThe city is the main city of the department Matagalpa, which has a high agricultural production. The principal products are different kinds of vegetables, rice, corn, flowers, and especially high quality coffee.
The famous poet Rubén Darío (1867 – 1916) was born in Ciudad Darío (previously named Metapa), one of the municipalities of the department Matagalpa. You can still visit the house where he was born. As a result of the mountainous characteristics of the area, national and private natural reserves form the main attraction. You can hike in these forested parks and explore the abundant and diverse flora and fauna. It is also interesting to visit the Cerro Musún (named hill of water by the native sumo people), the El Arenal reserve, or the private Selva Negra reserve. There are also numberless unexplored natural zones in the mountains, like rivers as the Grande de Matagalpa and de Río Blanco. In September the city celebrates the Güipil, Polka y Mazurca fair, and the coffee fair. To get to Matagalpa, you can take a bus from Managua at the Mayereo market terminal. In your own car, take the Pan-American Highway to the north (Carretera Norte) and get off at Sébaco, from where you can follow the signs to Matagalpa.
